Mohammad Sufiur Rahman is a seasoned Bangladeshi career diplomat and policy expert with more than three decades of experience in bilateral, regional, and multilateral diplomacy. A member of the 9th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs), he has served in key ambassadorial and multilateral roles in Asia, Oceania, and Europe.
Ambassador Rahman began his diplomatic career in 1991 after completing his BSc in Civil Engineering from BUET and an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka. Over the years, he has held numerous leadership positions at Bangladesh missions abroad and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with a specialization in regional cooperation, peacebuilding, and multilateral negotiation.
He served as High Commissioner to Sri Lanka (2012–2014), Ambassador to Myanmar (2014–2017), and High Commissioner to Australia (2017–2022), with concurrent accreditation to New Zealand and Fiji. During his posting in Myanmar, Ambassador Rahman played a critical role in managing sensitive diplomatic relations during the Rohingya humanitarian crisis. In Australia, he promoted trade, education, and diaspora engagement, strengthening ties across the Indo-Pacific.
In 2022, he was appointed Ambassador to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, where he represented Bangladesh’s interests in human rights, labor, disarmament, and development forums.
In April 2025, Ambassador Rahman was appointed Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, with the rank and status of a State Minister. In this role, he provides strategic counsel on foreign affairs and multilateral policy. He is also affiliated with academia and public policy, currently serving as a Senior Research Fellow at the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG), North South University, Dhaka.
Ambassador Rahman brings to the policy community deep expertise in regional diplomacy, multilateral negotiations, international development cooperation, and crisis management. He is also known for his clear-eyed strategic thinking and commitment to principled diplomacy.
