Lieutenant General (Retd.) Muhammad Mahfuzur Rahman, PhD

Lt. Gen.(Retd.) Mahfuzur Rahman is a distinguished retired three-star general of the Bangladesh Army, with nearly four decades of distinguished service in national defence, strategic leadership, and international peacekeeping.

 

A graduate of Jhenidah Cadet College, he was commissioned into the Bangladesh Army in 1981 following the 5th Long Course at the Bangladesh Military Academy. Over the course of his 39-year career, he commanded an infantry battalion, two brigades, and the 11th Infantry Division, while also holding a series of senior staff appointments — including Brigade Major, GSO-1, Director of Military Operations, and Adjutant General at Army Headquarters. He additionally served as Commandant of both the Defence Services Command & Staff College and the School of Infantry & Tactics.

 

Lt. Gen. Rahman has contributed to international peace and security through his participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Mozambique (UNOMOZ) and Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL). From February 2016 to November 2020, he served as the 14th Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division under the Prime Minister’s Office, where he oversaw critical operational and administrative functions across all three branches of Bangladesh’s armed forces.

 

He holds an exceptional academic record, including Master’s degrees in Defence Studies, War Studies, and Business Administration, an M.Phil. from the University of Madras, India, and a PhD from Jahangirnagar University. He is an alumnus of the National Defence College (India) and the Royal College of Defence Studies (United Kingdom), and has completed the Armed Forces War Course.

 

In recognition of his service and contributions, Lt. Gen. Rahman has been honoured with the Oshamanno Sheba Padak (OSP) and the prestigious Independence Day Award — among the highest distinctions conferred by the Government of Bangladesh.
